in common too? I felt like a paranoid fool. Rob wasmyfriend;
there was no reason to let Aaron have him in the breakup. "I've missed you guys too," I said.
"Seriously, think about coming out tonight."
"I will." And I gave it what I thought was a lot of consideration. When I got off the phone with Rob, I started to think that it was actually a good idea. I wanted to dance and I wanted to show off
Jonathan. I wanted to prove that I was really okay. And Iwasokay.
That was the surprising thing. The prospect of running into Aaron didn't scare me as much as it would have a few weeks before. But talking Jonathan into going out would be difficult. He'd told me that he wanted to see me but didn't want to be seen with me. But maybe Rob was right, I thought. Maybe I should simply not give Jonathan a choice.
I was still in what I thought of as my writing clothes--a T-shirt and a pair of destroyed jeans that I should have thrown out eons before; I liked how they fit, though, so I never could throw them out--when Jonathan showed up a little while later.
"Hey, J," I said as I let him into the apartment.
"Hi." His gaze traveled the whole length of my body until it settled on my feet. I was barefoot. He stared. At length, he said, "You have really nice feet."
I laughed. "Well, there's a compliment. Thanks. My friend Allie and I went for pedicures yesterday."
"Pedicures?" Jonathan asked. "And here you thought I never did anything stereotypically gay." I wiggled my toes, which Jonathan was still looking at. "See, from where I sit, being gay is actually quite freeing. There are plenty of straight guys who are too afraid to be perceived as anything less than 100 percent man, and thus they will never know the great pleasure that is a mani/pedi at the hands of Kim Lee. She's my Korean manicurist. She can do amazing things. I don't know this first hand, but I've heard a rumor that she can give you an orgasm just by touching this one spot on your foot."
"Wow," said Jonathan. Then he laughed and looked up at me. I loved his smile. His teeth were basically perfect except for the front two, one of which overlapped the other. It was subtle, and
you couldn't tell unless you spent as much time looking at his mouth as I did. He was like a bundle of these little imperfections that somehow came together to make a flawless whole.
Then I remembered my mission. "Say," I said. "You're a waist size what? Thirty-four?"
"Yeah, so?"
"We're going out."
His eyes widened. "What? I thought you said we were going to hang out here and watch a movie."
"Nope. I changed my mind. I've been cooped up here working for two days, and I was thinking all afternoon that I really wanted to go dancing tonight, that I haven't been out in forever. Like, really out, with people and flashing lights and the whole nine.
